To help SMIs, Cordoda Corporation Sdn Bhd, a network service provider, released initial findings and preliminary results of survey conducted by their newly established Small and Medium Industry Solutions Unit (SMISU) recently.

Today, much of the business communications and transactions by small medium industries (SMIs) are conducted conventionally using the telephone, the facsimile and handphones. The SMIs in Malaysia range from the manufacturing, retail through to professional services and specialty goods industries. These companies often do business across Malaysia, in the region and even internationally.

To help SMIs, Cordoda Corporation Sdn Bhd, a network service provider, released initial findings and preliminary results of survey conducted by their newly established Small and Medium Industry Solutions Unit (SMISU) recently. The unit undertook the survey targeting some 60 SMIs based in West and East Malaysia to understand and map the SMI landscape better.

Having obtained its Application Service License under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, Cordoda went further to receive MSC-status by the Multimedia Development Corporation in February 2001. (www.cordoda.com)

In recognition of the growing technology needs of the SMIs, SMISU was formed. It plans to offer immediate e-business capability to the SMIs enabling increased revenue, decreased operations cost and access to new markets.

Speaking to business partners and associates, Shane Hodge, chief operating officer of Cordoda said, "We initiated a dialogue by way of the survey to better understand the small and medium companies' business and technology requirements. We were also able to gauge more accurately their technology competence and understanding, thus enabling us to provide entry level education and solutions for this market".

Cordoda suggesting SMIs need an education and conversion process. It takes time and a lot of effort to help SMIs appreciate the business value of e-commerce. SMIs are often challenged in meeting the day to day needs of their respective operations and usually see investing in technology as an additional burden without realising how it can transform their lives and their top-line".

At the same time, Tivoli Systems, Inc. (www.tivoli.com), an IBM (www.ibm.com) company last month announced significant software enhancements aimed at helping organisations maximize their current information technology business value through an integrated e-business infrastructure management approach.

As an integral part of the comprehensive IBM e-business infrastructure solution (www.ibm.com/software), Tivoli technology management software helps traditional enterprises, emerging e-businesses, and Internet businesses worldwide to maximise their existing and future technology investments.

The solutions enhancements by Tivoli include Tivoli Web Services Manager and Tivoli Web Services Analyzer v1.6 for companies to ensure their web sites deliver and maintain a competitive advantage. These solutions provide improved real time event analysis, a real-time synthetic transaction investigator graphing tool, and Linux end-point support.

The other solution is Tivoli SecureWay Policy Director and Tivoli SecureWay Privacy Manager, which offer security and privacy management for business application systems. Able to be deployed separately based on the organisations' business needs, Tivoli SecureWay Policy Director provides access control management that centralises network and application security policy while Tivoli SecureWay Privacy Manager is an access control solution that enforces privacy policies, protecting consumers' personally identifiable information.

Meanwhile, according to the source, the SMISU is working closely with the national bodies and industry organisations to develop on-going education and awareness programmes, and simple to the most sophisticated e-solutions to help prepare SMIs in Malaysia for the technology age.

"The companies and organisations that we have talked to often see the cost of investment as major deterrent. They do not realise that through a variety of financing, leasing and delivery methods including the application service provider (ASP) model, businesses now can automate their fundamental business operations without the significant upfront costs", said Hodge on commenting on one of the more significant misconceptions and deterrents to investing in technology.

Cordoda focus is now on market education and to help the SMI sector migrate onto the e-platform. The new unit is concentrating on providing implementation and ongoing maintenance support, and consulting, to help customers harness the full range of benefits from their e-commerce applications.

Appreciating the challenges SMIs face migrating to the Internet platform, the SMISU approach involves developing a suitable strategy to introduce e-business practices, in consultation with client companies. Through collaboration in implementing the e-commerce solutions and offering on-going support, SMISU aims to establish itself as a technology partner to its small and medium-sized customers.
